Does the CIEC Certificate replace a certified translation?
Important: In many CIEC Contracting States, this multilingual certificate does indeed replace the need for a separate certified translation.
But beware: This is not universally applicable. If the certificate is submitted to a German authority (Registry Office, Immigration Office) that is not a party to the CIEC Convention, or if the certificate contains individual handwritten entries, the authority may still demand a certified translation.
Always check in advance with the requesting authority whether your international certificate is sufficient or whether you require an official translation by a sworn translator to avoid delays.
Recognition of the International Birth Certificate Abroad
The International Birth Certificate (CIEC Certificate) unfortunately has no worldwide validity. Its recognition is limited to the Contracting States of the Vienna CIEC Convention.
If you need to submit your International Birth Certificate in a country that is not a contracting state, you will usually absolutely require a certified translation into the respective official language (e.g., a Spanish translation for an authority in Chile or an English translation for an office in Canada).

For the Birth Registration at the Registry Office (Required Documents)
At the Birth Registration of your child at the German Registry Office (Standesamt), several documents are required. If one of these documents is in a foreign language, a certified translation by a sworn translator must be attached.
Basic Documents:
The Birth Notification (from the place of delivery or the midwife).
Your valid Identity Card or Passport.
The Birth Certificate or certified copy of the register of the mother.

What You Need the Birth Certificate Supplement For
The Birth Certificate Supplement (Geburtsbescheinigung) differs from the Birth Certificate (Geburtsurkunde) in that it represents a simplified copy and may only be used for designated purposes. You receive these supplements along with the official Birth Certificate from the Registry Office (Standesamt).
You require a certified translation of these supplements if the originals are in a foreign language and need to be submitted to German authorities for the following purposes:
Social Benefits: For applying for Parental Allowance (Elterngeld) or for applying for Child Benefit (Kindergeld) at the Family Fund (Familienkasse).
Health Insurance: For registering your child with the Health Insurance fund (Krankenkasse).
Note: For most other formal acts (marriage, immigration authorities, court), the complete Birth Certificate is usually required. No Damage or Obstruction: Make sure that no corners are cut off or text passages are covered by fingers or shadows. Blurry images lead to the rejection of the certification.
Legibility of Features: All handwritten entries, signatures, stamps, embossed seals, and watermarks of the issuing body must be clear and distinctly legible. The translator must note these features in the translation.

Apostille and Legalisation for Birth Certificates

The Apostille is required for countries that have signed the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents. It is a simple, formalised proof of authenticity that is applied quickly and unbureaucratically by the competent Regional Court (Landgericht) or the government administrative office.
2. The Legalisation (For Non-Contracting States)
The Legalisation is a more complex procedure and is required for all countries that are not party to the Hague Convention. Here, the authenticity of the document usually has to be confirmed by the diplomatic or consular representation of the destination country in Germany.
When do you need super-legalisation?
German Certificate Abroad: If your certificate originates from Germany, you must apply for the Apostille/Legalisationafter the certified translation at the competent court or government office.
Foreign Certificate in Germany: If the certificate originates from abroad, you need the Apostille/Legalisationin the country of origin before having it certified translated here.
