What You Need the Certified Translation of Your Medical License For

Recognition of Professional Qualifications in Germany (Equivalency Assessment)

The Medical License is the core document in the recognition process for doctors, dentists, or pharmacists who have completed their training abroad and want to work in Germany. To verify the equivalency of your degree with a German state examination, the relevant state authorities require a certified translation of your license. Only through a sworn specialist translator is it ensured that your qualifications are correctly transferred, the official requirements are met, and the equivalency assessment procedure can be concluded swiftly.

Application to Foreign Clinics and Hospitals

If you wish to continue your medical career abroad or start a specialist training program, the Medical License serves as an essential proof of qualification. International clinics, hospitals, and health authorities require a certified translation to legally review your authorization to practice. Our sworn translators ensure that all medical and legal technical terms are accurately transferred into the target language. This guarantees that your application abroad will be processed without misunderstandings or queries, and your professional registration will be expedited.

Applying for a License in Another EU or Non-EU Country

The Medical License (Approbation) is generally mutually recognized between member states according to the EU Professional Qualifications Directive (2005/36/EC). Nevertheless, competent medical councils or health authorities (e.g., in Switzerland, the UK, or overseas) often demand a certified translation of your Medical License to expedite the formal review. As this is a highly official document, the translation must be provided by a sworn translator. This step secures the legal recognition of your qualification and is a mandatory component of the application procedure for your license to practice in the destination country.

Why a certified translation with an official stamp?

A certified translation is a binding and official document for submission to national and international authorities. Your certified document bears a certification note, an official round stamp, and the signature of the state-certified translator. With this note, stamp, and signature, the completeness and accuracy of your translated document are confirmed. The translator is legally liable for this accuracy. The round stamp contains the translator’s name, language combinations, and the designation of the court before which the translator was sworn in.

Only sworn and certified translators, such as those working with dito, are authorized to produce certified translations. Like court interpreters, they are bound by confidentiality obligations (§189 para. 4 GVG) and by the duty to carry out translations fully and diligently. During the swearing-in process, the state authority examines the translator’s qualifications and legal expertise. The title “translator” itself is not protected in Germany. However, for certified translations, official authorization as a sworn, publicly appointed, or certified translator is required.

dito Beglaubigungen uses the translation management software OTM® for quality assurance in accordance with ISO 9001 and DIN EN 15038. This ensures the continuous improvement of the formal and linguistic quality of our translations and guarantees fast response times, adherence to deadlines, and data security for optimal customer satisfaction.

Important Notes on Translating Your Medical License

Checking the Original Document: Seals and Signatures of the State Examination Office

The certified translation of your Medical License must accurately reproduce the formal features of the original document (scan or photo). This specifically includes the seal and the signature of the responsible State Examination Office or the issuing authority. Should these authenticity features be indistinct or incomplete on the scan provided to us, our sworn translator must explicitly note this in the certification statement. Such deficiencies can later lead to rejection by the receiving authority. Therefore, always ensure that your original document has been scanned completely, is clearly legible, and is of high quality.

Is an Apostille or Legalization additionally required?

The certification by the sworn translator confirms solely the correctness of the translation of your Medical License. It does not provide proof of the authenticity of the original document. If you submit the translated license to foreign authorities outside of Germany (especially for applying for a professional license), they often demand an additional super-legalization. You must absolutely clarify with the receiving body whether an Apostille (for Hague Convention countries) or a Legalization (for non-convention countries) is required. This super-legalization generally must be affixed to the original documentbefore the actual translation.

The Necessity of Expertise: Medical and Legal Vocabulary

The Medical License is a complex document that contains a unique mix of medical and legal terminology. Phrases such as "state recognition of professional practice" or specific designations of State Examination Offices must not be translated literally, but must be translated in a legally compliant manner. Our sworn translators specialize in the German healthcare system and are proficient in the terminology of both fields. Through this specialized expertise, we guarantee a precise translation that meets all formal requirements of the receiving international Medical Councils or authorities.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions about Translating Your Medical License

Who is authorized to provide a certified translation of my Medical License?

The certified translation of your Medical License may only be prepared by a publicly appointed, sworn, or authorized translator. This is legally required to ensure the legal validity of the document. For Medical Licenses, it is particularly important to choose a sworn specialist translator who possesses in-depth medical and legal knowledge. Only then can the correct transfer of professional titles, examination content, and official designations be ensured. A self-translation or a translation by an unsworn service provider will be consistently rejected by Medical Councils and State Examination Offices.

Do academic titles have to be included in the translation?

In Germany, the Medical License itself typically does not contain academic degrees such as the Doctorate (Dr.), as these are part of a university promotion and not the state professional license. As sworn translators, we include the exact details from the original in the certified translation. If your academic titleis part of the original document (which can happen abroad) or if you require separate proof of your doctorate, this must also be certified translated as a separate document (e.g., Doctorate Certificate). Only this way can you ensure that all qualifications are correctly recognized by the receiving authority.

What are the most common errors that lead to rejection?

The rejection of a certified translation by the State Examination Office or Medical Council usually occurs due to formal deficiencies. The most common errors are:

  • Incompleteness: Not all seals, notes, footnotes, or reverse sides of the original document were included in the translation.
  • Incorrect Data:Names, dates of birth, or addresses deviate minimally from the information in the passport.
  • Translator Qualification: A translator who is not publicly appointed or sworn in the respective German state was commissioned.

We minimize these risks through a comprehensive review of the original scan before starting the translation and ensure that all certification formulas and personal data are transferred error-free and legally compliant.

What should I do if my Medical License was obtained in a non-EU country?

If your Medical License was obtained in a so-called non-EU country (non-EU/EEA country), you must undergo an Equivalency Assessment Procedure in Germany. The certified translation is an obligatory component of this process. Since direct equivalency is generally not automatically given, the responsible state authority (often the government of the respective German state) must examine the professional and formal equivalency of your training. Should the assessment be negative, a knowledge examination may be required. To accelerate this complex process, the error-free and completecertified translation of your Medical License and all associated proofs (e.g., Curriculum, Medical Diploma) by a sworn specialist translator is indispensable.
