♦ FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions about the Translation of Your Purchase Contract

When you purchase or sell a property abroad, the local authorities, land registries (Grundbuchämter), or notaries generally require a certified translation of your Purchase Contract into the local language or into German. Without a translation prepared and certified by sworn translators, the property transfer cannot be legally recognized or completed. Our translations ensure that all clauses, rights, and obligations are rendered legally and accurately.
A certified translation of the Purchase Contract is often required when buying or selling vehicles (cars, motorcycles, boats) with an international connection. This applies particularly to registration in another country or for submission to customs and the relevant transport authorities. We translate this contract quickly and precisely so that the legal transfer of ownership is recognized without any issue
In cases of inheritance where assets abroad are affected, the Purchase Contract for an estate item may be required for submission to courts or tax authorities. Similarly, international banks or financial institutions often require a certified translation as proof of the origin of funds or ownership. Our sworn translators guarantee the complete and legally valid rendition of your document.
A certified translation is a binding and official document for submission to national and international authorities. Your certified document bears a certification note, an official round stamp, and the signature of the state-certified translator. With this note, stamp, and signature, the completeness and accuracy of your translated document are confirmed. The translator is legally liable for this accuracy. The round stamp contains the translator’s name, language combinations, and the designation of the court before which the translator was sworn in.
Only sworn and certified translators, such as those working with dito, are authorized to produce certified translations. Like court interpreters, they are bound by confidentiality obligations (§189 para. 4 GVG) and by the duty to carry out translations fully and diligently. During the swearing-in process, the state authority examines the translator’s qualifications and legal expertise. The title “translator” itself is not protected in Germany. However, for certified translations, official authorization as a sworn, publicly appointed, or certified translator is required.

The certification by a sworn German translator is generally sufficient. However, additional over-certification may be necessary for the use of your translated Purchase Contract abroad. A distinction is made here:
Apostille: Is required in countries that are signatories to the Hague Convention (e.g., USA, Switzerland, many European countries). The Apostille confirms the authenticity of the signature and stamp of the sworn translator by the competent German Regional Court.
Legalization: Is required in all other countries (Non-Hague states). Here, the authenticity is confirmed by the embassy or consulate of the destination country.
Important Note: Be sure to check in advance with the requesting body (notary, foreign office, or bank) whether this additional certification is required. After completing the translation, we can explain the process for obtaining the Apostille from the competent authority or take this step over for you for an additional charge to simplify the process.
